On Thursday, January 23, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens held its Annual Member Celebration at the Garden Center. Continuing its year-long, 50th anniversary celebration, The Gardens hosted an evening themed as “Looking Back, Growing Forward,” in which it reflected on its rich history and teased a bright future with Executive Director & CEO Fred Spicer.

48th Annual Member Celebration

On Thursday, January 24, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens held its 48th Annual Member Celebration at the Garden Center. More than 150 members and staff gathered in Strange Auditorium for drinks and hors d’oeuvres catered by Savoie Catering. The festivities moved to the Linn-Henley Lecture Hall for the evening’s featured speaker, Kerry Smith. Smith, the State Master Gardener Coordinator for Alabama Cooperative Extension System (A.C.E.S.) led a talk titled “Your A.C.E.S. in the Hole,” a discussion about the unique relationship between Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Alabama Cooperative Extension System, which houses a satellite office at the Garden Center.

2013 Fall Donor Event

On November 1, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens held its annual Fall DonorAppreciation Event at the Swann House owned by Daniel and Brooke Coleman. Nearly 100donors gathered for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at the Magic City landmark. Among guests in attendance were Robert and Holly de Buys, Margi Ingram, Lyle Hohnke, Zachary Westall, Brad White, Diana Slaughter, Philip Morris, Barbara Sauer, Scott and Kelley Walton, William and Carolyn Satterfield, Thomas and Cathy Adams, Frances Blount, Tom and Elizabeth Broughton, Barbara Burton, Mike and Paula Rushing, Gene and Chris Boles, June Mays and Charles and Cheryl Mayer. A toast was raised to outgoing board president Henry Ray, while the group welcomed Tricia Noble into the position for 2013 and 2014.

Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens announces new Board of Directors for 2013

Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens is pleased to announce its 2013 Board of Directors. Tricia Noble will serve her first term as president, taking over for Past President Henry Ray. Scott Walton returns as treasurer and Barbara Burton will serve her first term as secretary. Hanson Slaughter will serve as president-elect. Jeanie Sherlock will assume the role of vice president of development, while Brian Barr returns as vice president of facilities and planning. Carl Jones will serve as governance chair. Lou Willie and Elizabeth Broughton will serve as officers. Sherlock is one of seven new board members for 2013, a group that includes: Mary Boehm, Chris Boles, Emily Bowron, Beverly Hoyt, Houston Gillespy, and Charles Goodrich. Five 2012 board members will rotate off: Shane Boatright, Sheryl Kimerling, Mike Malone, Fred Murray and Janet Taylor. 

Completing the 2013 Birmingham Botanical Gardens Board of Directors are: Cathy Adams, Laurie Allen, Maggie Brooke, Gary Burley, Tricia Holbrook, Robert Holmes, Margi Ingram, Clarke Gillespy, Kathryn Porter, Lucy Tutwiler and Mary Williamson.

47th Annual Members Celebration at Birmingham Botanical Gardens

The 47th Annual Members Celebration was held at Birmingham Botanical Gardens on Thursday, January 19. Over 200 people attended the sold-out event, formerly known as the Annual Member Dinner. Catering was provided by Kathy G., whose newly renovated The Gardens Cafe is expected to open on February 1. Magic City Harvest Executive Director Paulette Van Matre spoke to the group in the Linn-Henley Lecture Hall about her organization’s long relationship with The Gardens. Each year, The Gardens donates more than 3,000 pounds of food from the Bruno Vegetable Garden to help feed Birmingham’s hungriest. 2012 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

On Thursday, December 8, Birmingham Botanical Gardens hosted its annual Volunteer Appreciaton Luncheon, recognizing some of its most gracious individuals that have given time to The Gardens in the last year that has allowed prosperity. A crowd of nearly 150 gathered in the Ruth B. Strange Auditorium for a potluck luncheon. Entertainment was provided by The Crestwood Trio, featuring Melanie Rodgers, Chris Griffin and Niamh Clarke. Director of Education Henry Hughes presented Kathy Rostand with the Educator of the Year award. Special Events Coordinator Shelly McCarty presented Carol Beard with the Plantsperson of the Year award. Executive Director Fred Spicer presented the Herb Army with the Volunteer Partner of the Year award. Director of Library Services Hope Long presented Virginia McLean with the A. Brand Walton, Jr. Volunteer of the Year award, and Director of Development Olivia Alison presented Frances Blount with the Ida C. Burns Volunteer of the Year award. Blount served The Gardens as honorary chair for Antiques at The Gardens in 2011, raising over $390,000 to fund educational programs like Discovery Field Trips, the flagship program that has served over 85,000 students in the metro Birmingham area at no cost.
