2014 Annual Member Celebration

On Thursday, January 23, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens held its Annual Member Celebration at the Garden Center. Continuing its year-long, 50th anniversary celebration, The Gardens hosted an evening themed as “Looking Back, Growing Forward,” in which it reflected on its rich history and teased a bright future with Executive Director & CEO Fred Spicer.

48th Annual Member Celebration

On Thursday, January 24, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens held its 48th Annual Member Celebration at the Garden Center. More than 150 members and staff gathered in Strange Auditorium for drinks and hors d’oeuvres catered by Savoie Catering. The festivities moved to the Linn-Henley Lecture Hall for the evening’s featured speaker, Kerry Smith. Smith, the State Master Gardener Coordinator for Alabama Cooperative Extension System (A.C.E.S.) led a talk titled “Your A.C.E.S. in the Hole,” a discussion about the unique relationship between Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Alabama Cooperative Extension System, which houses a satellite office at the Garden Center.

Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens announces new Board of Directors for 2013

Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens is pleased to announce its 2013 Board of Directors. Tricia Noble will serve her first term as president, taking over for Past President Henry Ray. Scott Walton returns as treasurer and Barbara Burton will serve her first term as secretary. Hanson Slaughter will serve as president-elect. Jeanie Sherlock will assume the role of vice president of development, while Brian Barr returns as vice president of facilities and planning. Carl Jones will serve as governance chair. Lou Willie and Elizabeth Broughton will serve as officers. Sherlock is one of seven new board members for 2013, a group that includes: Mary Boehm, Chris Boles, Emily Bowron, Beverly Hoyt, Houston Gillespy, and Charles Goodrich. Five 2012 board members will rotate off: Shane Boatright, Sheryl Kimerling, Mike Malone, Fred Murray and Janet Taylor. 

Completing the 2013 Birmingham Botanical Gardens Board of Directors are: Cathy Adams, Laurie Allen, Maggie Brooke, Gary Burley, Tricia Holbrook, Robert Holmes, Margi Ingram, Clarke Gillespy, Kathryn Porter, Lucy Tutwiler and Mary Williamson.

Arrington Plant Adventure Zone Ribbon Cutting

On Thursday, April 26, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens gathered with local dignitaries for the ribbon-cutting of the Arrington Plant Adventure Zone. The newest garden at Birmingham Botanical Gardens is an inclusive space that will serve all of the Birmingham community, but will be a new center for Plant Adventures. The garden’s namesake, Dr. Richard Arrington, Jr., joined current Mayor William Bell and former Mayor Bernard Kincaid at the celebration. Birmingham Parks and Recreation Commissioner Larry Cockrell delivered the invocation before District 3 Councilor Valerie Abbott, Plant Adventures Coordinator Jennifer Sanders, Executive Director Fred Spicer and each Birmingham mayor addressed the crowd. Light refreshments were served following the ceremony in the Hodges Room and the Rushton Garden.
